Love, hugs, kisses, presents, advice, lots of spoiling and way more…! Who gives you all of this? La Mamma!! Muah, Muah!

To show how much that means for us we celebrate that with La Festa della Mamma (or Mother’s Day) on the 10th of May.

Mother’s Day lunch at Nonna’s all started in 1957 with a priest named Otello Migliosi from a little town Assisi, Tordibetto. He wanted to show how special his mother was and decided to give her a whole day of recognition that would return on a yearly basis. This was the beginning of Mother’s day, and in 1970 he created a Mother’s Park around a bronze statue that is representing motherhood, to keep this day both important and memorable.

During this lovely time spent with the family, you will get to experience a special Mother’s Day delicacy, spaghetti alle vongole. Before pasta was one of the most famous servings of the Italian cuisine, chefs like Vincenzo Corrado were already preparing soup or broth with clams for the Campanian the upper-class families in the 17th and 18th centuries. Ippolito Cavalcanti, the duke of Buanvicino, was the first one to publish a formal recipe for this wonderful meal. The recipe was written in Neapolitan dialect, and was seen as a local treasure. The only ingredients you need for the traditional spaghetti alle vongole are; olive oil, garlic, spaghetti, vongole and some fresh parsley.

Nonna always said ‘always leave room for dessert’, despite the fact that there was enough food, every member of the family always has room for some post-dinner snacks. It is not acceptable to not eat a little of Nonna’s favourite, Tiramisu. Tiramisu is one of the foremost well-known delicacies of the Italian cuisine. Tiramisu is made by combining espresso-dipped ladyfingers and a creamy lightly sweetened mascarpone cream.

The tradition of Tiramisu came from a Latin motto: Dulcis in Fundo, meaning the best, yummiest treat always comes at the end of something, usually after a meal. Over time restaurants started to sell the dessert and the story of Tiramisu was being told by grandmothers and great-grandmothers that continued for decades. This sweet dish is mostly served on special occasions, because it takes time to prepare. The preparations take about an hour and it has to be in the fridge for at least 6 hours before serving.

On Mother’s Day, the daughters and sons get a special gift or card for their mothers to show how much they appreciate what they all do for them. Some will make it their selves, like a card or some will buy a gift, like flowers or provide a gift that is meaningful to symbolise the strong relationship between the mother and her children.
